Elective Course Descriptions

August 01, 2008

Fulton Jr. High Elective Courses
Listed below is a brief description of each elective course available to 7th and 8th grade Fulton students.

Chorus
Chorus is a performance oriented class which offers the students a chance to sing a wide variety of songs from light classical to Broadway to popular. A study of musical notation, ear training, and music appreciation is fostered and encouraged through the performance approach.

Students have a chance to perform in the Illinois Music Educator's District Festival, the solo/ensemble contest, and the District and State Organizational Contests. Also, the students present a Fall and Spring Concert

Band
The instrumental music program offered strives for excellence in the playing abilities of the individual and the ensemble. Development of skills and techniques for performances in concerts and participation in District and State Contests is essential. The individual also learns group morale and discipline as well as an understanding of accomplishment through hard work. Self discipline and character building become part of the involvement in this program.

In addition to the daily, full ensemble rehearsal, each student has one period of sectional rehearsal each week. These sectional rehearsals give the student the opportunity to develop technical and tonal skills, work on small ensemble and solo literature, and increase his proficiency on the band literature being prepared for each performance.

Art
The seventh grade art class consists of a broad overview of basic art concepts and skills through varied media and techniques. Tempera paint, watercolors, printing ink, chalks, crayon, craypa, conte crayon, and markers are used.
The eighth grade art class builds on concepts and techniques previously used at the seventh grade level. Students are geared toward specialization the second semester in preparation for the high school art program.
